Use of nuclear energy is probably one of the most efficient ways of generating electricity and power, however it comes with huge challenges. An unplanned nuclear meltdown in a nuclear reactor can contaminate the air and water across large areas. We have been fortunate that inspite of many nuclear reactors functioning globally, there have been only a few known nuclear power plant disasters, given the challenging nature of this provocative source of energy. However, a few of those that happened as a result of improper nuclear power plant operation or maintenance have been hugely disastrous in terms of impact on human lives and economic costs. The five worst nuclear mishaps in world history are discussed below.
In 1979, The Three Mile Island nuclear power plant tragedy in Pennsylvania was the biggest disaster in American history. On March 28, 1979, The Three Mile Island Unit 2 (TMI-2) station near Middletown, Pennsylvania, experienced a partial meltdown that cost roughly $1 billion. After an unscheduled shutdown, a relief valve collapse caused extensive damage to the core, resulting in the most devastating nuclear power plant disaster in US history. Better equipment, training programmes, and public awareness would have made a huge difference. Despite the fact that no one was killed and only little amounts of radioactive radiation were emitted, the accident sparked a debate about the country's nuclear power project.
